Advertising

Advertising is a key marketing tactic.

A message can be delivered to the right people through a variety of advertising methods, including mail, the internet, newspapers, magazines, television, radio and the phone book.

Make sure advertising provides accurate information about the business to customers.

Check the ACCC website’s advertising and selling page for information on advertising and the Competition and Consumer Act (formerly the Trade Practices Act).

Advertising is the technique of making products/services known to those customers most likely to purchase them from the business. As it can be expensive, advertising should be used in the most effective and economical manner possible.  Explore options including trade magazines, local and community newspapers, regional and community radio, industry associations and the internet.

Often with advertising, editorial or other promotional opportunites can be negotiated. Understand what the options are and how you can get the most out of it before commiting to advertising spend.

Advertising aims to:

  • make the name of the business familiar to the public and/or target market segment
  • create goodwill and build a favourable image
  • educate and inform the public
  • offer specific products/services
  • draw customer interest in discovering more about the products/services of the business
  • generate sales.
