About This Guide

The "Winning Exports" guide covers the key issues that must be addressed by a business if it wants to be a successful exporter.

The guide's step-by-step approach helps plan and develop export market activities in a systematic way, building export knowledge and experience as you go.

If you do not have the skills and resources to undertake research or analysis, or some of the practicalities of exporting, the guide indicates where assistance may be available.

By using the "Winning Exports" guide you should gain:

  • an understanding of what is needed to succeed in exporting;

  • a realistic assessment of whether your firm is export ready;

  • assistance in determining export market objectives;

  • practical advice to enable you to succeed with export orders;

  • an achievable export market plan for your company.

How is the Guide Structured?

The guide consists of nine sections, which are outlined briefly below:

  1. The "Export Experience" outlines the benefits of exporting and the features of successful exporters.

  2. "Preparing for Export" helps you assess whether you have the commitment, skills and resources required to be successful in export markets and provides guidance on how to gain all the market research you need in a cost-effective way.

  3. "The Five Cs of Competing for Export Markets" provides a step-by-step guide to choosing your target market, identifying your target, customers and distribution options and assessing the strength of your competitors.

  4. "Visiting Your Market" provides detailed action plans to ensure you gain the most out of visiting your export markets.

  5. "The Five Ps of Practical Export Development" provides a practical guide to choosing a partner, developing products or services for export and deciding how to distribute, price and promote your product or service.

  6. "Resourcing for Export" helps you plan for the resources needed to enter your export market (eg staffing needs, budgeting, improvements to products and services and additional finance).

  7. "Finalising Your Export Plan" takes you through a series of action plans which summarise sections 2-6 and form the basis upon which your export plan is built.

  8. "Developing Exports" helps you review your progress and update your plan to ensure ongoing success in export markets.

  9. "Guides" provides practical information on resources you can draw on when developing export markets.

The "Winning Exports" guide is accompanied by "The Export Action Workbook" which provides worksheets that take you through the key aspects of the export development process, forming the foundation of your export plan.
