Retail Tenancy Unit

The Department of State and Regional Development’s Retail Tenancy Unit (RTU) provides information and advice to people involved in retail leases, such as tenants, landlords, solicitors and real estate agents.

The RTU offers information and advice over the telephone about retail lease matters, and helps parties in dispute work towards solutions.  The Unit also organises mediations between parties where the dispute cannot otherwise be settled.  Trained advice officers can assist callers with information and advice about entering into a retail lease, bonds, damage to retail premises, rent increases, shopping centre management issues, rent arrears, as well as information about the mediation of retail lease disputes at the RTU.

Retailers, landlords, solicitors and real estate agents can also access information about retail leases through the RTU website www.retailtenancy.nsw.gov.au.  The website has information about retail leases, the legal rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords.  There is also information about what mediation is and how mediation at the RTU works.  Parties to a dispute can also apply for mediation online.
