Unleash the Creative Thinker in You:  Innovative thinking for People and Product Development

On 30 May 2007, 70 members of the Women in Manufacturing Network and special guests were inspired and entertained by a panel of leaders in the Australian exporting sphere.  The annual lunch, generously hosted by Mount Druitt TAFE, was opened by the Minister for Western Sydney, the Honourable Barbara Perry, MP.  She focused on the enormous positive contributions that Western Sydney manufacturers are making to the manufacturing sector and the prosperity they are bringing to the region.  Guests were then entertained and informed by Tim Harcourt, Chief Economist, Australian Trade Commission, about the current trends in Australian exporting and how women in manufacturing can join the “heartland” of businesses for whom exporting is a core part of their business strategy and long term prosperity (click here to view presentation).

Following a lovely two-course lunch, guests were able to seek answers to their exporting questions from three women actually involved in manufacturing and exporting.  Christine Gibbs Stewart, herself experienced in international sales and the General Manager, Australian Business International Trade Services, moderated the panel of Evelyn Hicks, Chairman of Autobake, and Ching-Mei Tuan, Business Development Manager with Ultraceuticals.  Evelyn talked about her experiences in over 40 years of exporting Autobake’s custom made industrial baking ovens.  Ching-Mei shared the lessons her skincare product company had learned in their five years in operation, particularly in relation to ensuring consistency of products when exported overseas.  Guests also heard from the Director of Mount Druitt TAFE, Anne Ford, who spoke passionately about TAFE’s manufacturing and engineering program, and Ms Julie Scott, Executive Director Small Business, Department of State and Regional Development, about the exciting opportunities for women in business in NSW, including a women only delegation to Dubai scheduled for November 2007.
