Youth Enterprise Education

Enterprise education programs give young people the chance to further develop mathematical, analytical, communication and social skills by applying them in realistic situations.  Young people develop management skills and an awareness of business operations, and discover that self employment offers a genuine career alternative.  They gain an appreciation of how business enterprises operate and how business decisions are made.

The value of enterprise education was highlighted in the Karpin Report, ’Enterprising Nation’, in April 1995.  It stressed that there is a need in Australia to develop problem solving skills, creativity, and a sense of personal responsibility through education. These skills and values which are essential in developing an entrepreneurial culture are best established early in life.

The enterprise education programs sponsored and supported by DSRD are:

Young Achievement Australia Business Skills Program - over a 24 week period, groups of Year 9-11 and tertiary students operate their own company.  They raise share capital; design, manufacture and sell a product or provide a service; and then wind up the company, paying a dividend to shareholders. Students work with mentors from the business community.
