Dowden Boxing Fitness

Dowden Boxing Fitness is located in Broken Hill and is owned and managed by David Dowden.

David is a former boxer from Western Australia who is now living in Broken Hill where he has established Dowden Boxing Fitness - a "boxercise" fitness training gym.

David, who employs two people in his gym, decided he wanted to develop his business to increase turnover.  He contacted the NSW Department of State and Regional Development's Aboriginal Business Development Manager for Western NSW who began working with David to develop his business skills and promote the enterprise.

David won a contract to train Aboriginal footballer Tom Kickett from the Hawthorn Football Club and also trains Broken Hill amateur boxers.

Encouraging and promoting a healthy lifestyle to youth is important to David and he holds sessions for Indigenous and non-Indigenous children at the PCYC.  The sessions are fun and encourage youth to eat a healthy diet and attend school regularly.

David Dowden was born in Perth in 1971 and grew up in Midland in Western Australia.

He said that he was picked on at school and a policeman suggested he take up boxing at the PCYC.  He started learning boxing at the Morely PCYC.

At 17 David turned professional and went to Port Hedland where he established the first PCYC at South Hedland.  A referee in Port Hedland referred him to Tony Mundine's gym in Redfern.  David has had 10 professional fights.

Lacemates

Lisa Louden is a mother of three sports-mad boys, a business women and an inventor.  Being involved with sporting committees over the years, Lisa invented the Lacemates Lace Retainer as a fundraiser to help clubs buy much-needed sports equipment.

This Aussie invention gets rid of the unsightly electrical tape sportspeople use to keep their boots in place.  Simply pull the lace retainer over the boot, making sure the seam is under the boot.  Once the Lacemates is on, there is no need to take it off.  Simply roll it down, attend to laces and pull it back up.  Once the laces are tied, pull the Lacemates Lace Retainer up so the logo is on top of the knot and the top of the lace retainer comes up over the tongue of the boot.

Lacemates Lace Retainer comes in small, medium and large sizes.  The fabric is waterproof and stretches to fit.  Club, school or sponsor logos can be screen printed on Lacemates Lace Retainer making them a must-have in sports fashion.

Lacemates Lace Retainer is not available in sports stores.  This will soon change following Lisa’s contacting the NSW Department of State and Regional Development.  Lacemates accessed support from their local Aboriginal Business Development Manager to expand their markets by using the Aboriginal Business Link Program.  The Link Program helps business owners take part in industry trade shows.  Support for Lacemates comes from the Aboriginal Business Growth Program which is managed by the Department of State and Regional Development.

Lacemates Lace Retainers are available on their website at www.lacemates.com.au or by calling Lacemates on 4342 8188.
