Voice over IP (VoIP)

The full definition of VoIP is Voice over Internet Protocol.  It describes the method of making voice calls using your Internet connection.  Small businesses can save considerably on their data calls using VoIP services.

Software VoIP

Skype offers free video and voice calling between users, with the ability to add multiple people to the conversation.  Once installed, all you need is a USB headset.  Once installed, you'll see a Skype window just like an MSN Messenger window.  Look up colleagues who are also on Skype and double click to start a voice conversation with them.

Tips

You can purchase handsets to use instead of headphones.

You can call normal landlines and other mobile phones using the SkypeOut function for a small fee.

Hardware VoIP

To take things step further, you can install a hardware VoIP solution which sits between your telephone and your Internet connection and allows you to use your standard telephone for the voice calls.  There is no restriction on the numbers you can call - but you pay a small ongoing fee.  See Engin as an example.
